the drift project
. Artist Development Residency and Physical Training towards PerformanceBRAZIL - GERMANY - KOSOVO - UK - NORWAY - AUSTRALIA - FRANCE - ITALY - AUSTRIA
Persis-Jade Maravala (PARA-ACTIVE) in partnership with Jorge Lopes Ramos
(ZECORA URA Theatre Network) and with invited international guest leaders in
over 9 countries are holding the drift project - a unique theatre training opportunity.
This project is part of a series spanning Brazil, Kosovo, Germany, Norway, France,
Italy and the UK - a rare meeting point for performers who want to be at the centre
of their creative endeavour. This work aims to enable artistic development and
the ability to self-determine process and practice.Sessions run by Persis-Jade Maravala (Yemen) will explore the living dynamic
that is represented through the performer’s action. The training developed by
Persis-Jade Maravala is driven by the research of Jerzy Grotowski, and has
developed from Asian and Eastern European roots. She leads an intercultural
training that does not aim to produce a style, but a continuous process of
encounters, transformations and discovery of theatrical dynamics. This work aims
to remove inhibitions and inspire a strong sense of mental and physical discipline
enabling the performer to take greater risks and accept responsibility in his or
her own work.Jorge Lopes Ramos (Brazil) will be drawing on Japanese Butoh principles and
Afro-Brazilian Capoeira Angola to provide artists with a solid understanding of their
performance potential though acrobatics, voice, movement and rhythm. He will also
be mentoring artists through compositions in the fields of movement, directing and
improvisation.Participants will be provided with an environment in which to develop their own
theatre practice. This can be done either through solo work or by collaborating with
other theatre-makers concerned with analysing their own practice whilst developing
a piece of original material. The evenings training sessions will include the
opportunity to work with an audience. We will actively be encouraging participants
to find their own unique voice in theatre and to bring any material that is relevant
to their process enquiry.Previous guest leaders have included Giuliano Campo (University of Canterbury)
and Gabriel Gawin (Song of the Goat / Anima Mundi). Gabriel Gawin, director of
acclaimed adaptations of Shakespearean texts is currently working with Song of
the Goat theatre from Poland and will be drawing on this experience to look at the
role of the spoken word.
These residencies are open to anyone regardless of experience, but you are required
to submit a clear proposal for the work you wish to develop during the residency.

. . english . . .
Workshop: The body as channel
Led by: Jorge Lopes RamosThis workshop is the result of a practical investigation of physical, mental and
vocal nature developed from Antonin Artaud's writings, Afro-Brazilian Capoeira
Angola and Japanese Butoh danc e principles. This work is an approach to both
the actor's body in its totality and the singular cultural identity of each individual,
offering an intrinsic understanding of the elements for corporeal listening and
existence, organicity of the body in movement, suggestive manipulation,
suspended ageing, emptying of ‘the channel’ and redirecting presence and
performance energy. The practical investigation of the body as channel is not
an end to a process, but instead a means which offers a clear and practical
interpretation of the total encounter of the body with ancient principles of some
of the richest and most diverse theatrical cultures.. . . portuguese . . .
