SYNOPSIS - Shakespeare's The Tempest

Twelve years ago Prospero was Duke of Milan. Being of a bookish disposition, he withdrew more and more
into his studies, leaving the management of his state to his brother Antonio.

Eventually, with the help of Alonso, King of Naples, and the King's brother Sebastian - inveterate enemies
of Prospero - Antonio usurped the dukedom for himself. Prospero and his baby daughter Miranda were put
to sea in a rotten boat and eventually landed on a distant island once ruled by the witch Sycorax but now
inhabited only by her son, Caliban, and Ariel, a spirit.

Since then Prospero has ruled the island and its two inhabitants by the use of magic arts derived from his studies.
His daughter Miranda has grown up seeing no other human being.

Prospero divines that fortune has brought his enemies close to the island and he sees and opportunity to work
his revenge. He uses his powers to raise a storm which shipwrecks them. When Miranda questions this,
he tells her the story of their arrival on the island and assures her that no real harm will come to the survivors.

The shipwrecked travellers are separated. At Prospero's bidding, the invisible Ariel directs their wanderings.
He leads Ferdinand, the King's son, to Prospero's cell, where he and Miranda fall instantly in love.
Prospero sets heavy tasks to test Ferdinand.

The King of Naples searches for his son, although fearing him to be drowned. Sebastian, the king's brother,
plots to kill him and seize the crown. The drunken butler, Stephano, and the jester, Trinculo, encounter Caliban
and are persuaded by him to kill Prospero so that they can rule the island. However, Ariel manages to make
mischief between them and they are soon bickering amongst themselves.

Satisfied that Ferdinand has met all his challenges, Prospero presents the young couple with a betrothal masque
celebrating chastity and the blessings of marriage. He is distracted from this, however, when he remembers
 Caliban's plot.

As Prospero's plan draws to its climax, he vows that upon its completion he will abandon his magic arts.
Ariel brings Alonso and his followers to the cell, and Prospero, in his own persona as Duke of Milan,
confronts his enemies and forgives them. In the betrothal of Ferdinand and Miranda, the rift between Naples
and Milan is healed.

Finally, Prospero grants Ariel his freedom and prepares to leave the island for Milan and his restored Dukedom.

Prospero, Duke of Milan, his dukedom usurped by his brother Antonio, is put to sea with his daughter Miranda and some magical books smuggled in by his loyal councillor Gonzalo. The sea casts them up on an island where Prospero, exercising his magical powers, makes a home for himself and Miranda. One day a great storm, which Prospero has conjured, breaks up a passing ship and delivers to him the members of his usurping court. Treacherous brother, fellow conspirators and old friend alike come under Prospero's spell. Shakespeare's last play. Developed in collaboration with members of award winning and internationally acclaimed Lume Teatro (Brazil), Teatr Piesn Kozla (Song of the Goat Theatre, Poland). Zecora Ura Theatre has put The Tempest under the magnifying glass and read between the lines to bring you this spicy, Latin-American flavoured version of the bard's last play.            THE BRITISH THEATRE GUIDE

 Brazilian Tempest at Greenwich

  http://www.britishtheatreguide.info/news/zutempest.htm

International theatre company Zecora Ura is to bring a very international version of Shakespeae's The Tempest to the Greenwich Playhouse from 7th March to 2nd April.

Beginning with the company's exchange of practice with the celebrated Brazilian Theatre Companies LUME Teatro and Grupo Moitara as well as research into Brazilian folklore and culture, followed by a tour of seven cities in Brazil, they have now teamed up with award-winning Polish director Gabriel Gawin, a founding member and then principal performer in the Polish Theatre Company, Teatr Piesn Kozla (Song of the Goat) for five years, who has been faced, as the company says, "with the challenging task of assimilating the Latin American spirit alive amongst the cast with his broad knowledge and experience of Shakespearian text and Polish theatre practice."

With this production the company is "endeavouring to mix the four languages (Spanish, Portuguese, Basque and English) represented within the cast, into an island pidgin. The result of this experiment is a beguiling sonorous flow of seductive sounds that communicates the essence of Shakespeare's images. The 'pidgining' of The Tempest stems from Zecora Ura theatre's desire to challenge audience perception of other languages. A direct result of this transformation is that the play becomes instantly more accessible to an audience of today's culturally-diverse society."

The production is directed by Gabriel Gawin (Poland/UK) with dramaturgy by Hannah Whelan (France/UK). It is designed by Ingvill Fossheim (Norway), with lighting design by Oliver Halls (UK). Costumes are by Marie Dahlstrom (Sweden) and set construction by Edward Wirtz (South Africa). The cast consists of Cast Agnes Brekke (Colombia), Unai Lopez de Armentia (Spain) and Jorge Lopes Ramos (Brazil).
